The Technology Behind a 100,000-Capacity Open-Air Weekend
A festival site is a temporary city with its own power grid, network, payment infrastructure and safety systems, built on grass and removed a week later.
When Reggae Land brought 100,000 people to the National Bowl across a weekend at the start of August, the music was the visible part of an operation that is, in engineering terms, the construction and decommissioning of a temporary city.
Start with power. A site of that scale requires generation, distribution and redundancy sufficient to run stages, lighting, screens, catering, welfare, medical and site lighting, with enough headroom that a single generator failure does not take a stage offline. All of it is installed on ground that had nothing on it a fortnight earlier.
Then connectivity. Modern festivals are almost entirely cashless, which means card payments across dozens of concurrent vendors have to work reliably, in a field, with tens of thousands of mobile devices competing for the same spectrum. Temporary cell infrastructure and dedicated payment networks exist precisely because consumer mobile coverage collapses under that density. A payment network that fails at a festival does not degrade gracefully, it stops trading.
Access control has the same characteristic. Scanning a hundred thousand tickets across a weekend requires systems that keep working when connectivity does not, which means offline validation with later reconciliation rather than a straightforward call to a server.
Safety systems sit underneath all of it: crowd monitoring, radio networks that must not fail, medical dispatch, and clearly rehearsed procedures for an incident nobody expects. Every one of those is a system built for a specific weekend and then taken apart.
The reason this is interesting beyond the events industry is that festival infrastructure has to be correct on the first attempt. There is no soft launch, no phased rollout, no maintenance window. The gates open at a published time and the system either works or it very publicly does not. Most software is never held to that standard, and most software would benefit from being designed as though it were.
